GCC nets back-to-back women's soccer titles

GROVE CITY, PA, October 27, 2001--Four different Lady Wolverines found the back of the net Saturday as top-seeded Grove City College claimed its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference championship crown with a 4-1 win over third-seeded Waynesburg College.

The PAC title marked Grove City's fifth overall, tying Bethany College for the most championships won since the first was decided in 1991.

The Lady Wolverines rallied with four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 in the 18th minute on a goal by Lisa Juskowich, who scored into an open net when Grove City set up for a free kick after a line judge whistled offsides.  The goal counted since the middle official never stopped play.

Grove City erased that memory just two minutes later when freshman Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, PA/Wilmington) dribbled in alone and evened the score with her fourth goal of the tournament and team-high 14th of the season.

The score remained 1-1 until late in the first half when sophomore Lindsey Cuffe (Columbia Falls, MT/Columbia Falls) netted the eventual game-winner on a direct kick in the 43rd minute, her third goal of the season.  Grove City added a pair of insurance goals in the second half, the first coming off a corner kick in the 67th minute as sophomore Diane Metzger (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) headed in her sixth goal of the year off a set by Cuffe.  Sophomore Danielle Balliet (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) capped the scoring in the 75th minute with her third goal of the fall, assisted by freshman Leah Partridge (Newport, VT/United Christian Academy).

Junior Katy Turman (Abington, PA/Abington) and senior Erica Long (Cranberry Twp., PA/Slippery Rock) split time in goal, facing seven shots in the game.  Grove City attempted 28 shots.

Senior Kathy Keehlwetter (Mercer, PA/Mercer) was named the tournament's defensive MVP and Novosel bagged the offensive MVP award.

On Friday, Keehlwetter was announced as the 2001 league MVP and one of seven Lady Wolverine All-PAC award-winners.  Joining Keehlwetter on the PAC First Team were Turman, Balliet, Novosel and sophomore Meg Tilley (Columbia, MD/Hammond).  Cuffe and senior Jennifer Duly (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) were named to the PAC Second Team.
