Grove City blanks Bethany in PAC semifinals, 5-0
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team earned its fourth consecutive trip to the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament championship match with a 5-0 triumph over Bethany Wednesday afternoon in the PAC tournament semifinals at College Field.
Junior Michelle Novosel (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) scored a pair of first-half goals to give Grove City (16-3-1) a 2-0 halftime lead. The Lady Wolverines then sealed their 15th consecutive victory with three goals in a 13-minute span in the second half.
Senior Diane Metzger pushed Grove City's lead to 3-0 with her seventh goal of the season at 50:34 as Novosel supplied her school-record 13th assist of the season. Sophomore Stacey Brubaker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) tallied the fourth goal of the afternoon at 60:50 after a feed from junior Becky Iden (Morristown, N.J./Parsippany Christian).
Freshman Lindsay Bowman (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) capped the scoring three minutes later with her first career goal. Junior Leah Partridge (Newport, Vt./United Christian) assisted on the goal.
Metzger assisted Novosel's first goal, which came at 7:27 of the first half. Thirty minutes later, Novosel scored an unassisted goal, her 12th of the season.
In goal, sophomore Lindsay Thompson (Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) stopped two shots in 69 minutes to earn her 15th win of the year, which is also a single-season school record. Freshman Kori Koper (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) finished up the shutout with 21 scoreless minutes that included one save.
Grove City out-shot Bethany 22-4. It is Grove City's ninth shutout of the season.
As the top seed, Grove City will host the PAC championship match Saturday at 1 p.m. Grove City plays defending PAC champion Westminster, which downed third-seeded Washington and Jefferson 2-1 Wednesday. Grove City swept both meetings with Westminster this year.
