Grove City upsets Titans, advances to title match

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- For the sixth straight season, the Grove City College women's soccer team will play in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament title match. Tuesday afternoon, the fourth-seeded Wolverines earned a berth in Saturday's title match with a 1-1, shootout victory over top-seeded Westminster in a PAC semifinal.

Grove City won the shootout 4-2 to advance to Saturday's final. Last season, Westminster won at Grove City in the PAC title match, winning via shootout.

Freshman Laura Shipley (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's) broke a scoreless tie at 33:47 with an unassisted goal. Grove City (6-11-3) carried that lead into the second half but Westminster pulled into a 1-1 tie on Mallory Bugel's goal at 47:02.

In the shootout, which followed the two 10-minute overtime periods, the Wolverines fell behind 2-1 after two rounds. Junior Maia Siber (Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley) tied the shootout at 2-2 in the third round while freshman goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) then posted back-to-back saves on penalty kicks.

Junior Lindsay Bowman (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) put Grove City up 3-2 in the shootout and after a Preston save in the fourth round, senior Kristin Hummel (Greensboro, Ala./Cherry Hill East, N.J.) clinched the victory by beating Westminster goalkeeper Whitney Griffin.

During the 110 minutes of play, Preston stopped a career-high 21 shots. Westminster (16-4-1) out-shot Grove City, 39-13. Grove City will play at No. 3 Thomas More Saturday in the PAC title match. The Wolverines are seeking their first PAC title since 2001.
