Grove City opens 2006 with shutout win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Medaille Friday afternoon at College Field. It is the Wolverines' first win in a season opener since 2002.

Sophomore forward Laura Shipley (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Academy) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with her first goal of the season. Junior Alix Flowers (Lynchburg, Va./New Covenant) supplied the assist.

The Wolverines doubled the lead to 2-0 in the the second half as freshman Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) scored her first collegiate goal at 52:09. Senior Maia Siber (Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley) assisted. Grove City then extended the lead to 3-0 13 minutes later as freshman Lauren Woodring (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) recorded her first career goal. Sophomore Rebecca Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) provided the assist.

In goal, sophomores Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) combined for the shutout. Pragel earned the win by making one save. The Wolverines out-shot Medaille, 19-3.

It is Grove City's first shutout in a season opener since a 3-0 win over Hiram in the 1997 season opener. Grove City will host Maryville (Tenn.) Saturday at 1 p.m.
