Grove City improves to 3-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- For the first time in six seasons, the Grove City College women's soccer team is 3-0. Tuesday afternoon, the Wolverines won for the third time in five days as Grove City earned a 6-0 win over visiting Waynesburg (0-2) in non-conference action at College Field.

It is Grove City's third straight shutout to open the 2006 season.

Grove City led 3-0 at halftime and then broke the match open in the second half. Junior midfielder Bethany Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) scored her first goal of the season at 8:25, following an assist from classmate Alix Flowers (Lynchburg, Va./New Covenant).

Grove City's lead grew to 2-0 at 28:06 as sophomore Stephanie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian) scored on a rebound. Sophomore Anne Koller (Titusville, Pa./Homeschooled) recorded the assist. The Wolverines then closed the first half's scoring at 44:05 as freshman Lauren Woodring (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored an unassisted goal.

Wild scored her second goal of the match at 60:55, pushing Grove City's lead to 4-0. Freshman Rachel Stelzer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Bible Baptist) scored her first collegiate goal at 83:50 on an assist from Kristen Hebel (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) while junior Trisha Griffith headed in the Wolverines' sixth goal at 87:44. Hebel assisted on the goal, which was Griffith's first of the season.

In goal, sophomores Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) combined for the shutout. Pragel played the first half while Preston made two saves in the second half. Pragel is this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Goalkeeper/Defensive Player of the Week. She is the first-ever recipient of that award.

Tuesday's match did not count towards the PAC standings even though both Grove City and Waynesburg are PAC members. This season, when two PAC teams meet, only the second meeting counts in the conference standings. Waynesburg is the only team that Grove City plays twice this year.

Grove City will visit John Carroll Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
