Grove City wins PAC opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Four different Grove City players scored goals Saturday afternoon, helping the Wolverines to a 5-1 victory over host Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference women's soccer action at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Wolverines are now 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the PAC. The victory snaps a two-match slide for Grove City.

Sophomore Laura Shipley (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the match, scoring an unassisted goal. Junior Bethany Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) doubled Grove City's  lead by scoring an unassisted goal at 24:37.

Senior Lindsay Bowman (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) recorded her first goal of 2006 at 40:16, scoring off a corner kick from sophomore Sara Griffin (Marilla, N.Y./Nardin Academy).

Shipley added her second goal of the match at 53:49 to give Grove City a 4-0 lead. The lead reached 5-0 two minutes later as freshman Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) scored her sixth goal of the season. Both second half goals were unassisted.

Waynesburg's Joanna Butterworth broke up Grove City's shutout bid at 68:48 by scoring on a penalty kick.

Grove City out-shot the Yellow Jackets, 21-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) made three saves for Grove City.

The Wolverines will visit archrival Westminster Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
