Wolverines bounce back with big win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- One day after surrendering five goals in the final 28 minutes of a 5-2 loss to Penn State Behrend, the Grove City College women's soccer team rebounded Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 home win over Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at College Field.

Seven different Grove City players scored in the win. Freshman Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis) and junior Trisha Griffith (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) scored twice. Yang also assisted a second-half goal by junior Bethany Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air).

Yang opened the scoring for Grove City (9-6-1, 3-1-1 PAC) at 8:05 with her third goal of the season. Peck provided the assist. Seven minutes later, freshman Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) extended Grove City's lead to 2-0. Sophomore Stephanie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian) assisted on the goal.

Sophomore Katie Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) posted an unassisted goal at 30:01, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 at 36:21 when sophomore Rebecca Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) headed in a corner kick from classmate Sara Griffin (Marilla, N.Y./Nardin Academy).

Bethany Peck's goal at 45:34 helped ignite Grove City's five-goal second half. At 49:05, Yang headed in a Michelle Peck assist, giving Grove City a 6-0 lead.

Griffith scored unassisted at 65:10 while Wolff assisted freshman Jessica Mills (Pittsgrove, N.J./A.P. Schalick) at the 71:21 mark. It is Mills' first collegiate goal. Griffith closed the scoring at 76:34 with her second goal of the match. Mills assisted Griffith.

Grove City owned a 35-4 edge in shots. Grove City also had 14 corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeepers Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) each played one half in goal for the combined shutout.

Cyndi Metzler stopped 16 shots in goal for Thiel (1-15-1, 0-5 PAC). It is Grove City's largest margin of victory since a 10-1 win at Bethany exactly two years ago, October 26, 2004.

Grove City will close the regular season Saturday afternoon against visiting Thomas More at 12 p.m. The Wolverines will open PAC Championship Tournament play Wednesday, November 1.
