Catholic nips Grove City, 1-0, in ECAC semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team concluded the 2007 season Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to visiting Catholic University (12-3-4) in the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament at College Field.

Grove City, the top seed in the tournament, finishes the season with a 16-4-1 overall record. Fifth-seeded Catholic will play in Sunday afternoon's championship match at 2 p.m.

Catholic broke a scoreless tie at 77:00 as Diana Spadaro scored an unassisted goal. Grove City's best opportunity to tie the match came at 88:52 but Catholic goalkeeper Tere Rossi blocked a blast from Grove City junior Laura Shipley (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's). Rossi stopped six saves to preserve the shutout for the Cardinals.

Catholic held a 19-12 edge in shots. Catholic also had six corner kicks, compared to five for the Wolverines. Junior goalkeeper Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) recorded seven saves.

Grove City's 16-4-1 record is the best, percentage-wise, in program history. The Wolverines' 16 wins this year tie the single-season school record. The 2003 team went 16-5-1.
