Wolverines open 2008 with win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior forward Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis) scored three first-half goals while sophomore midfielder Emily Ostlund (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) scored twice Friday evening to help the Grove City College women's soccer team open the 2008 season with an 8-2 victory over visiting Medaille at College Field.

Ostlund put Grove City ahead by scoring at the 8:33 mark. Junior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) supplied the assist. Medaille tied the match at 1-1 on Danielle Radlich's unassisted goal at 18:00. However, Yang scored exactly one minute later to put Grove City (1-0) ahead to stay.

Yang extended the lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal at 23:24. Two minutes later, she completed her hat trick with another unassisted goal. Peck closed the first half scoring at 44:06 by recording her first goal of the season.

Ostlund scored off a corner kick at 66:45 to extend the lead to 6-1. Senior Anne Koller (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) scored Grove City's seventh goal of the day at 70:12 while freshman Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 77:09.

Grove City owned a 26-10 advantage in shots. Each team had six corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) stopped two shots in 77 minutes of action. Freshman Nikki Spina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made one save in 13 minutes.

Grove City will host Mount St. Joseph Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
