Wolverines roll in PAC opener; Wild scores hat trick
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team won its 10th consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines secured a 7-0 victory over visiting Thiel at College Field.
Senior forward Stephanie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian) recorded her first hat trick of 2008 to spark the Grove City offense while senior Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) and freshman Nikki Spina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) combined for the shutout in goal.
Grove City (4-5-2, 1-0 PAC) took a 1-0 lead at 15:32 as junior Lauren Woodring (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored her first goal of the season. Junior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) assisted Woodring's goal.
Wild scored her first goal of the day at 28:53, helping the Wolverines lead 2-0 at halftime.
Grove City broke the match open with five second-half goals. Wild scored at 61:55 after an assist from junior Elise Bender (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac). Less than three minutes later, freshman Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) recorded her first collegiate goal at the 64:45 mark. Freshman Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) assisted Hurley's score.
Wild completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal at 66:47 while freshman Cara Colley (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) tallied the Wolverines' sixth goal of the afternoon at 73:44. Freshman Morgan Osterhouse (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 77:33.
Grove City out-shot Thiel (0-7-3, 0-1), 54-1. Thiel goalkeeper Jill Harry made 24 saves.
Grove City last lost a PAC opener Sept. 17, 1998 at Bethany, 3-2. The Wolverines are now 22-0 all-time against Thiel. It is Grove City's second shutout of the season. The Wolverines had been 0-3-2 in their last five matches prior to Saturday's win.
The Wolverines will visit La Roche Monday at 4 p.m. Grove City will then host Bethany at 4 p.m. Wednesday in PAC play.
