Wolverines roll past Saint Vincent, 4-0
LATROBE, Pa. -- Juniors Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) and Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis) each scored a pair of goals Wednesday afternoon to help the Grove City College women's soccer team earn a 4-0 victory over host Saint Vincent in a clash of Presidents' Athletic Conference members at Chuck Noll Field.
The victory is Grove City's fifth straight overall. Each of the five wins has been by shutout. The Wolverines have not allowed a goal in 479 minutes of game action.
Grove City (8-5-2) took the lead at the 4:25 mark as Peck scored her fourth goal of the season. Senior Stephanie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian) assisted Peck's goal. The Wolverines then doubled the lead at 42:59 as Yang scored an unassisted goal.
In the second half, Peck scored an unassisted goal at 54:37 to give Grove City a 3-0 lead. Yang closed the scoring at 67:16 with her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Wild assisted Yang's second-half goal. Wild now has three assists this year and shares the team lead in that category with Peck and junior Elise Bender (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac).
Grove City out-shot the Bearcats (4-8-2), 24-11. Grove City also owned a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Diana Pragel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) stopped five shots in 80 minutes to earn her eighth win of the season. Freshman Nikki Spina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) completed the shutout by playing the final 10 minutes in goal. Overall, it is Grove City's sixth shutout of the season.
The Wolverines' 479-minute shutout streak is the program's longest since Grove City did not allow a goal over 633:54 from Sept. 30-Oct. 26, 2004. The Wolverines had six straight shutouts during that stretch.
Wednesday's match does not count in the PAC standings due to Saint Vincent's provisional status in NCAA Division III. Grove City (3-0 PAC) will host Thomas More Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend at the College.
