Wolverines rally past Daemen in opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over visiting Daemen in non-conference action at College Field Friday afternoon.
Grove City (1-0) broke a 3-3 tie at the 87:43 mark as freshman Grace Reimen (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) scored her first collegiate goal after an assist from senior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air).
Grove City fell behind 2-0 in the first half but quickly tied the match in the closing moments of the period. Peck scored an unassisted goal at 42:09 to cut the lead in half. Two minutes later, freshman Julie Apple (Catonsville, Md./Homeschooled) recorded her first collegiate goal to tie the match.
Daemen (0-1) reclaimed a 3-2 lead at 49:30 on a goal from Jenelle Masi. However, Grove City tied the match again at 57:57 as senior Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis) tallied her first goal of 2009.
Daemen took a 1-0 lead at 38:15 on a goal from Kelsey O'Leary. The lead grew to 2-0 when Grove City scored an "own goal."
Senior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) stopped one shot in the second half. Freshman Keri Ketchum (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) played the first half in goal and stopped five shots in 45 minutes.
Grove City owned a 22-15 edge in shots. The Wolverines also owned a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Grove City is 6-3-1 in its last 10 season openers. It is the first time this decade that Grove City has erased a two-goal deficit to win a match.
The Wolverines will host Mount Union Saturday at 1 p.m. in non-conference action.
