Grove City tops W&J in league opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 home win over defending league champion Washington & Jefferson at College Field.
Grove City broke a 2-2 tie at the 82:01 mark as junior Emily Ostlund (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) scored her first goal of the 2009 season.
Ostlund assisted on Grove City's first two goals of the match, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) put the Wolverines up 1-0 just 86 seconds into the match. It is Hurley's first goal of the season. Ostlund assisted.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 2-0 at 19:29 as freshman Grace Riemen (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) scored her second goal of 2009 following an Ostlund assist.
W&J (3-5-1, 0-1 PAC) cut the lead in half at 56:43 as Elizabeth Bendick scored off a corner kick. The Presidents then tied the match at 70:29 on Molly Macioce's unassisted goal.
Grove City outshot W&J 24-9 and owned a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) made one save to earn the victory. Stephanie Saussol made 10 saves for W&J.
Grove City (2-3-3, 1-0 PAC) will host Carnegie Mellon Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
