Wolverines whip Thiel
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team remained atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday afternoon by earning a 5-0 win over host Thiel (2-8-2, 0-2 PAC) in a conference clash at Alumni Stadium.
Grove City (3-5-3, 2-0 PAC) bolted to a 1-0 lead at the 4:51 mark as freshman Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) scored her third goal of 2009. Senior Elise Bender (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) assisted the goal.
The Wolverines doubled the lead to 2-0 at 23:26 as Rieman assisted on a goal by senior Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis).
Grove City sealed the match with three second-half goals. Senior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) scored her team-leading fifth goal of 2009 at 55:20 after a cross from junior Emily Ostlund (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and a Rieman redirect.
Ostlund recorded Grove City's fourth goal at 66:01 off a Bender assist. The Wolverines then closed the scoring at 68:12 as sophomore Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) scored her second goal of the season. Senior Lauren Woodring (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) assisted on the score.
Bender has a team-high four assists on the season while Ostlund has three goals and three assists in nine matches.
Grove City owned a 32-1 edge in shots along with a 16-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Keri Ketcham (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) earned her first collegiate win by playing the first half in goal. She did not face a shot. Senior Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) played the final 45 minutes and made one save.
Grove City will visit Geneva Saturday.
