Grove City takes sole possession of 1st place
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team took sole possession of first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over host Thomas More (14-2, 5-1 PAC) at Bank of Kentucky Field. Grove City (8-5-3, 5-0 PAC) can clinch home-field advantage in the PAC Championship Tournament with a win at Chatham Wednesday afternoon or a win at Westminster October 31.
Grove City scored both of its goals in the first half. Senior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) scored at 27:27 on a penalty kick to break the scoreless tie. It is her team-leading ninth goal of the season and Grove City's first penalty kick goal this year.
The Wolverines extended the lead to 2-0 at 39:06 as junior Emily Ostlund (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) scored her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) assisted Ostlund's goal.
Senior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) stopped three shots to preserve the Wolverines' fifth shutout of the season. Grove City outshot Thomas More 19-11. Thomas More had four corner kicks, compared to three for Grove City.
It is Grove City's first win over Thomas More since September 10, 2005. It is also the Wolverines' first-ever win at Thomas More.
Grove City will visit Chatham Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in PAC play. The Wolverines are looking to clinch the top seed in the conference tournament for the first time since 2004.
