Wolverines clinch top seed
PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College women's soccer team clinched the top seed in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by earning a 4-0 win at Chatham Wednesday afternoon in conference action. Grove City is now 6-0 in the PAC and will have home-field advantage throughout the tournament.
Senior midfielder Elise Bender (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) scored two goals and assisted on a third in the first half to give the Wolverines (9-5-3) a 3-0 halftime lead.
Junior Emily Ostlund (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) gave Grove City the lead just 21 seconds into the match with her seventh goal of the season. Bender assisted the goal.
Bender doubled Grove City's lead at 12:29 with an unassisted goal. Sixty-one seconds later, she scored her fifth goal of the year to give Grove City a 3-0 lead. Freshman Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) assisted the Bender goal.
The Wolverines closed the scoring at 57:14 as Rieman recorded her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) assisted Rieman's goal.
Grove City owned a 32-1 advantage in shots. The Wolverines also doubled up Chatham in corner kicks, 6-3. Freshman goalkeeper Keri Ketcham (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) improved to 4-1-2 on the season by making one save in 90 minutes. It is Ketcham's second shutout of the season and team's seventh shutout overall.
Bender, Ostlund and Rieman all share the team lead with six assists this year. Grove City has now seven consecutive matches, including six shutout victories.
The Wolverines will conclude the regular season Saturday at conference rival Westminster.
