Grove City advances to championship
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team advanced to the championship match of Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament by earning a 2-0 victory over No. 4 seed Westminster Tuesday afternoon at College Field. The top-seeded Wolverines (11-5-3) will now host Washington & Jefferson in Saturday's championship match at 1 p.m. W&J edged Thomas More in overtime Tuesday, 2-1.
Grove City broke a scoreless tie at the 16:41 mark as Westminster scored an "own goal." Grove City senior Michelle Peck (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) sent a corner kick into the box and the ball deflected off the shoulder of a Westminster defender and went into the net.
The Wolverines added an insurance goal at 63:26 as sophomore Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) booted a rebound into the goal for her fourth goal of 2009.
Senior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) preserved the shutout by stopping four shots. It is the Wolverines' ninth shutout of the season.
Grove City out-shot Westminster (13-7-1) 11-8. Grove City also held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Jenn Cantella stopped four shots for Westminster.
The Wolverines have now won nine straight matches, which is the program's longest win streak since winning nine in a row from October 4-November 4, 2004. The eighth win in the current streak came last Saturday when Grove City won at Westminster, 3-0.
Grove City will host W&J Saturday in a rematch of the teams' regular-season meeting September 26 at College Field. That day, the Wolverines pulled out a 3-2 victory. W&J is the defending conference champion. Grove City is seeking its first conference title since 2001. It will be Grove City's seventh appearance in the PAC Championship Tournament finals this decade.
