Behrend nips Grove City in ECAC quarterfinal
ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team concluded the 2009 season with a 2-1 setback against host Penn State Behrend Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament at Gannon University.
Grove City, the No. 5 seed in the eight-team tournament, finishes the season with an 11-7-3 overall record. Fourth-seeded Behrend (14-3-3) advances to the semifinals.
Penn State Behrend took a 1-0 lead at 9:10 as Heather Klimuszka broke a scoreless tie. However, the Wolverines countered at 19:40 as freshman Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) scored her seventh goal of the season.
Behrend reclaimed the lead with 1:43 remaining in the first half as Danielle Pelensky scored the eventual game-winner for the Lions.
Grove City owned a 16-11 edge in shots. The Wolverines also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Bethany Preston (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) made six saves for Grove City, which made its second ECAC appearance in the last three seasons.
Behrend will face either Penn State Altoona or La Roche in the tournament semifinals Saturday.
