Wolverines blank UPJ in opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened the 2010 season Friday afternoon by rolling to a 4-0 victory over visiting Pitt-Johnstown in non-conference action at College Field. The Wolverines (1-0) have now won five consecutive season openers.

Junior forward Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) scored twice in the first half to give Grove City a 2-0 halftime lead. Hurley broke a scoreless tie at 29:10 after receiving an assist from senior defender Hannah Yang (Davis, Calif./Davis).

Hurley's second goal of the afternoon came at the 34:32 mark. Sophomore Julie Apple (Catonsville, Md./Homeschooled) supplied the assist.

The Wolverines extended the lead to 3-0 at 48:30 as freshman Michelle Stevens (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) recorded her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) assisted Stevens' score.

Senior Emily Ostlund closed the scoring at 57:07 with an unassisted goal.

Grove City owned a 32-0 edge in shots, along with a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) earned her first collegiate win for the Wolverines.

Victoria Der Vanik stopped 14 shots for Pitt-Johnstown (0-1).

Grove City had not played an NCAA Division II foe since downing Slippery Rock 15 years ago. Grove City has now won nine straight regular season matches. The Wolverines own a scoreless streak of 561 minutes in regular-season play. Grove City is now 7-2 in its last nine home openers. Grove City is 10-8-1 all-time in season openers.

The Wolverines will host Oberlin Saturday at 1 p.m.
