Grove City rolls past D'Youville
HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened the 2011 season Friday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over D'Youville in non-conference action at Hamburg High School.
Grove City (1-0) broke open the match with four first-half goals. Sophomore Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) put the Wolverines up 1-0 just 30 seconds into the match after receiving an assist from senior Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana).
Cessar scored her second goal of the match at 23:13 after receiving another assist from Hurley. Sixty-seven seconds later, sophomore Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) pushed the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal.
Sophomore Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) closed the first-half scoring with an unassisted goal at 40:20. Freshman Micah Richardson (York, Pa./Eastern York) capped the scoring in the second half by scoring her first collegiate goal at 80:40. Weber assisted Richardson's goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) stopped one shot in the first half to earn the win. Freshman Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) played the second half and preserved the shutout with three saves.
Grove City owned a 20-4 edge in shots, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half. The Wolverines also owned a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Friday's match marked the first meeting between the teams. Grove City has now won six straight season openers.
Grove City will host Heidelberg Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the 2011 home opener.
