Wolverines blank The Berg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team improved to 2-0 overall Wednesday afternoon by earning a 3-0 victory over visiting Heidelberg (1-2) in non-conference action at College Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines took control of the match by scoring three times in a nine-minute span. Sophomore midfielder Michelle Stevens (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal at 48:28.

The Wolverines pushed the lead to 2-0 at 51:46 when sophomore defender Leah Wilt (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) scored her first collegiate goal after retrieving a rebound in front of the net.

Sophomore forward Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) closed the scoring with her first goal of the season at 57:43. Senior Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) assisted Bishop's goal.

Grove City owned a 28-10 edge in shots, including a 19-7 margin in the second half. The Wolverines also had 12 corner kicks, compared to just two for Heidelberg.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) and freshman goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) combined on the shutout. Yost made two saves in the first half and Lathrop stopped three shots in the second half, earning her first win.

Grove City has now won six straight home openers. The Wolverines are 7-0-2 in their last nine home matches against Ohio opponents.

The Wolverines will visit Case Western Friday at 5 p.m. in non-conference action.
