Wolverines blank Thiel for win No. 199

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team improved to 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over host Thiel (4-9-2, 0-4 PAC) at Alumni Stadium.

Grove City (5-5-2 overall) took a 1-0 lead at 19:15 when senior forward Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) scored after receiving an assist from sophomore defender Jessica Heck (Canton, Mich./Plymouth).

The Wolverines then broke open the match with four second-half goals. Sophomore forward Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) pushed the lead to 2-0 when she scored off a corner kick by freshman defender Sarah Flenniken (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) at 47:34.

Two minutes later, sophomore Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) scored an unassisted goal at 49:54 to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

Hurley scored her second goal of the match at 61:04 with Heck again supplying the assist. Grove City then closed the scoring at 82:42 when junior forward Sarah Peachey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) scored after receiving an assist from sophomore forward Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City).

In goal, freshman Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) earned her first shutout victory of the season. She made one save in 90 minutes.

Grove City outshot Thiel 27-2, including 13-0 in the first half. The Wolverines also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

All-time, Grove City now has 199 wins in program history. The Wolverines are 199-150-27 in 20 years of intercollegiate action. Grove City hosts Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference play.
