Wolverines fall in ECAC quarterfinals
FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to host Frostburg State (15-2-2) Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament. The Wolverines, seeded eighth in the eight-team tournament, conclude the season with a 10-8-2 overall record.
Grove City forged a 1-1 tie at the 11:50 mark in the first half when sophomore Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Emily Hurley (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) assisted Weber's goal.
Top-seeded Frostburg State broke open the match early in the second half with a pair of goals in the first four minutes. Adria Graham scored an unassisted goal at 46:06 to put the Bobcats ahead. Stephanie Fazenbaker followed with an unassisted score at 48:52.
Dorie Gedridge closed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 79:28. Graham scored her first goal of the match at 4:56, giving Frostburg State an early lead.
Frostburg State outshot Grove City 24-7, including a 15-3 edge in the second half. Frostburg State also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) stopped six shots for Grove City.
Grove City's 10-8-2 record marks the fifth straight season that the Wolverines have reached double-digits in wins. Grove City has won 10 or matches in 10 of the last 12 seasons. The Wolverines have also posted six straight winning seasons and 11 winning seasons in the last dozen years.
The Wolverines will lose Hurley, senior Cara Colley (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford), senior Arielle Goyzueta (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen), senior Morgan Osterhouse (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and senior Christen Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson) to graduation.
