Grove City rolls past Heidelberg
TIFFIN, Ohio -- Junior forward Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) scored two first-half goals Saturday afternoon, helping lift the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over homestanding Heidelberg in non-conference action at Hidden Valley.
Weber broke a scoreless tie at 16:32 with her second goal of the season. Junior defender Leah Wilt (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) assisted Weber's score.
Five minutes later, Weber recorded her second goal of the afternoon after receiving a cross from freshman Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian).
Heidelberg (0-2) cut the lead in half at 57:39 on a goal by Jeannette Jinkinson. However, Grove City (1-0-1) quickly countered when sophomore Holly Spofford (Broad Run, Va./Homeschooled) scored at 65:53. Junior Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) assisted Spofford's goal.
Grove City outshot Heidelberg, 26-2, including a 14-0 edge in the first half. The Wolverines also held an 8-1 corner kick advantage.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) played the first half in goal and earned the win. Junior Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word Academy) played the second half and made one save.
The Wolverines will face Rochester Institute of Technology Friday night at John Carroll University. The match begins at 7 p.m.
