Grove City humbles Allegheny

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Bethany Kolodziej (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career Thursday afternoon, helping vault the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over regional rival Allegheny (4-2) at College Field.

Kolodziej broke a scoreless tie at 9:34 with her first goal of the afternoon. Junior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) provided the assist.

The Wolverines (4-0-1) doubled their lead at 46:02 when Kolodziej corralled a loose ball in front of the net and booted it into the goal.

Grove City owned a 12-11 advantage in shots, along with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stopped four shots to record her first shutout of the season.

Grove City is off to its best start since 2007, when the Wolverines also started 4-0-1. The 2007 team ultimately began the season with an 11-0-1 record. The Wolverines are currently ninth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region poll. Allegheny entered Thursday's match ranked fifth in the NSCAA regional poll.

The Wolverines will visit Baldwin-Wallace Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
