Grove City thumps Bethany, 11-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon with an 11-0 victory over visiting Bethany at College Field. The win extended Grove City's win streak to eight matches.

Eight different players scored in the win for the Wolverines. Junior forward Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) scored three goals and assisted on a fourth score while junior forward Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) scored twice.

Junior defender Lydia Caissy (Dedham, Mass./Dedham), freshman midfielder Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), junior midfielder Becky McManus (Bel Air, Md./Harford Christian), junior forward Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus), freshman Micaela Velloney (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbrier Christian) and freshman midfielder Jade Welsh (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) all scored once.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes as Weber scored twice. Tarolli assisted Weber's goal at 7:02 while senior midfielder Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) supplied the assist on Weber's score at 12:05.

Caissy pushed the lead to 3-0 at 18:46 with an unassisted goal. McManus followed 90 seconds later with her second goal of 2012. Freshman Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) assisted the McManus score.

Bishop scored an unassisted goal at 23:55 while Welsh recorded her first collegiate goal at the 39:34 mark. Sophomore Nicole Youngs-Stahl (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) assisted Welsh's score. Mathes' unassisted goal at 43:55 closed the first-half scoring.

Weber completed her first hat trick at 57:31 after receiving an assist from junior midfielder Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock). Tarolli scored an unassisted goal at 63:22 while Weber assisted Bishop's goal at 65:13.

Velloney closed the scoring with an unassisted tally at 81:31.

Grove City owned a 32-5 edge in shots. The Wolverines had five corner kicks and Bethany had none. Three Grove City goalkeepers combined for the shutout. Sophomore Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, Pa./Hunterdon Central) played 20 minutes in goal. Junior Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) made two saves in 40 minutes of action. Freshman Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) played the final 30 minutes.

The eight-match win streak is Grove City's longest since the 2009 squad won nine consecutive matches. Grove City owns a 13-0-1 record in its last 14 regular season matches.

Grove City hosts Thomas More Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in conference action.
