Grove City blanks Chatham

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior forward Becky McManus (Bel Air, Md./Harford Christian) scored a pair of goals while sophomore defender Julie Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) recorded two assists Tuesday afternoon to help lift the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over visiting Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at College Field.

Freshman Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), sophomore Sarah Flenniken (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and freshman Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) also scored for Grove City (11-2-1, 4-2 PAC).

Mathes scored an unassisted goal at 5:40 to put Grove City ahead. McManus boosted the lead to 2-0 at 12:03 with her first goal of the afternoon. Flenniken assisted the McManus score.

Thomas recorded her first goal of the season at 22:30 after receiving an assist from Eckendorf. Eckendorf then assisted Flenniken's first goal of 2012, which came at the 26:22 mark.

McManus' unassisted goal at 53:53 closed the scoring. She made her first start of the season Tuesday.

Grove City held a 40-1 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) and freshman Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) combined for the shutout in goal. Yost played the first half while Lapia made one save in the second half.

Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
