Grove City falls to Messiah in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at defending NCAA Division III champion Messiah (20-1-1) Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Messiah will advance to the tournament's round of 16 while Grove City concludes the 2012 season with a 16-4-2 overall record.

Messiah scored twice in the first 14 minutes of the match to take early command. Anne Trapp scored her first goal of the season at 9:22 from outside the box to break the scoreless tie. At 13:12, Emily Schneider scored her third goal of 2012, doubling the lead.

Messiah added an insurance goal at 74:20 when Alicia Frey tallied her 11th goal of the season. The Falcons owned a 20-2 edge in shots and a 14-2 corner kick advantage.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stopped four shots for Grove City.

Saturday, Grove City earned a 1-0 overtime win over Western Connecticut State, which represented the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history. Grove City's 16 wins this year match the single-season program mark first set by the 2003 team. The 2007 Wolverines also won 16 matches.

Four seniors will graduate from the program: forward Julie Apple (Catonsville, Md./Homeschooled), midfielder Bethany Kolodziej (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), forward Sarah Peachey (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) and midfielder Grace Rieman (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled).
