Wolverines charge past Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over visiting Waynesburg (3-6, 0-1) at College Field.

Grove City took command of the match by scoring three times in a four-minute span. Sophomore midfielder Madison Zajicek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) broke a 1-1 tie at 73:14 when scored her first collegiate goal. Zajicek directed a corner kick from freshman defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) into the net, giving Grove City a 2-1 lead.

The lead grew to 3-1 at 75:12 as senior forward Becky McManus (Bel Air, Md./Harford Christian) scored her third goal of the season. Junior defender Molly Weitzel (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) assisted McManus's goal.

McManus then closed the flurry by scoring an unassisted goal at 77:33. She leads Grove City with four goals.

Grove City (4-6-1, 1-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead at 11:44 when senior midfielder Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) scored off an assist from senior forward Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus). Waynesburg tied the match at 61:16 on an unassisted goal by Karleigh Murphey.

Grove City owned a 19-10 edge in shots, including a 10-3 advantage in the second half. The Wolverines also held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) played a scoreless first half in goal and made two saves. Senior Tiffany Yost (Christiana, Pa./Living Word) played the second half.

Tarolli and White share the team lead with three assists each. Grove City is 14-1 in its last 15 conference openers. The four goals are a season high for Grove City.

The Wolverines will visit conference foe Thiel Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
