Wolverines pull away at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team used a goal just before halftime and another just after intermission to break open a tie game en route to a 4-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory at Thiel on Wednesday night.

Four different players scored goals for the Wolverines (5-6-1, 2-0 PAC), as junior Holly Spofford (Broad Run, Va./Homeschooled), senior Sam Weber (Freeport, Pa./Freeport), senior Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) and freshman Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) each found the back of the net.

Grove City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as senior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) played a through ball from the 25-yard line to Spofford, who finished for her first goal of the season.

Thiel (6-5, 0-2) answered quickly, as Morgan Berg scored just 75 seconds later on an Elizabeth Wilkinson tap-pass off an indirect kick to even the score.

Just 26 seconds before halftime, Weber netted what would prove to be the game-winner with her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Wolverines extended their lead to 3-1 less than two minutes into the second half, as Tarolli scored her first goal of the season on an assist from fellow senior Shannon Bishop (Grove City, Pa./Grove City).

White added some insurance in the 66th minute by ripping a shot from the 20-yard line into the upper left corner of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Junior Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) earned the win in goal for the Wolverines while sophomore Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) played 31 minutes of scoreless action in net to close the game.

Grove City returns to action on Saturday, hosting Bethany in PAC action at 1:00 p.m.
