McManus leads Wolverines past Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior Becky McManus (Bel Air, Md./Harford Christian) scored twice and classmate Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) added a goal and an assist as the Grove City College women's soccer team held off a late Geneva charge to earn a 3-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over the Golden Tornadoes on Tuesday afternoon at College Field.

Junior Holly Spofford (Broad Run, Va./Homeschooled) also notched her first assist of the season for the Wolverines, who improved to 7-6-1 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in PAC action.

Grove City took control of the match early, as Tarolli beat her defender and slotted a ball to McManus for a goal after just six minutes of play.

Geneva (4-9, 1-3 PAC) would hold the Wolverines in check for the remainder of the half, but McManus made it a 2-0 game early in the second half when she headed a serve from Spofford just inside the left post in the 55th minute.

Tarolli added a goal of her own in the 63rd minute by beating a defender to make it a 3-0 game.

Geneva scored their lone goal in the 80th minute, as Heidi Mann made a strong clear off a Grove City corner to Kimberly Orihel for a breakaway goal.

The Golden Tornadoes would threaten with four more shots in the final ten minutes, but the Wolverines were able to hold on and secure the victory.

Junior Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded two saves in goal for the Wolverines in the win. Grove City held a 23-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.

With her two goals, McManus extended her team lead in that category to seven. Tarolli continues to lead the Wolverines in assists with four.

Grove City travels to PAC foe Washington & Jefferson on Saturday.
