McManus, Cessar edge Grove City past Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Becky McManus (Bel Air, Md./Harford Christian) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 106th minute as the Grove City College women's soccer team pulled out an important 3-2 double-overtime victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

Senior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) scored twice in regulation and assisted on McManus' game-winner as the Wolverines (8-6-1, 5-0 PAC) remained perfect in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The win was the first regular-season victory over the Presidents (8-6, 3-2) since 2009 and the first at W&J since 2004.

The Presidents took an early lead in the ninth minute when Nikki Hledak put a left-footed shot just inside the far post to give W&J a 1-0 lead.

After battling for much of the first half, Cessar evened the score at 1-1 by controlling and converting off a rebound in the 41st minute.

Holly Shipley put the Presidents back on top in the 54th minute by slipping a ball past Wolverine junior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central).

Cessar would have the answer for the Wolverines once again, heading in a goal off a free kick from senior Jessica Heck (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) in the 67th minute.

Defense would control the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period, sending the Wolverines into double overtime for the second time in 2013.

Cessar played a through-ball to McManus in transition, and the senior striker beat one defender and past the Presidents' goalkeeper, who had come out of goal in an attempt to clear.

Lathrop recorded five saves in goal for the Wolverines in the win.

Grove City hosts Chatham in PAC action on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
