Wolverines roll past Saint Vincent

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team improved to 7-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 4-1 victory over Saint Vincent on Tuesday afternoon at College Field.

Senior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) led the way for the Wolverines (10-7-1 overall) with a goal and two assists while senior Lydia Caissy (Dedham, Mass./Dedham), sophomore Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and junior Holly Spofford (Broad Run, Va./Homeschooled) each added goals.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when senior Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) found Cessar on a cross from the right side. For Cessar, it was her sixth goal of the season while Tarolli notched her team-leading fifth assist.

Saint Vincent (9-7-1, 4-3-1 PAC) responded, as Lindsey Daniels collected a ball out of a scrum in front of the goal and finished to even the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute.

The Wolverines wouldn't go down on this day, however, scoring twice in the final eight minutes of the first half to create some distance. Caissy collected a ball in front of the net and scored her first goal of the season in the 38th minute while Thomas finished a feed from Cessar in the 42nd minute.

After a scorless first 30 minutes of the second half, Cessar found Spofford, who poked a ball past Bearcat goalkeeper Kelsey Farrand to make it a 4-1 Wolverine advantage.

Grove City held an 14-6 edge in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. In goal, junior Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stopped two shots to earn the victory.

With the victory, the Wolverines currently are second in the PAC standings with 21 points, just behind Thomas More (7-0, 21 points) and ahead of Westminster (5-0-2, 17 points). A Thomas More win over Westminster tomorrow would guarantee the Wolverines a top-two finish. The Wolverines host Thomas More on Saturday at 1:00.

Prior to Saturday's match, the Wolverines will honor their nine seniors- Shannon Bishop, Lydia Caissy, Sarah Cessar, Jessica Heck, Becky McManus, Chelsea Tarolli, Sam Weber, Leah Wilt, and Tiffany Yost. That group has led Grove City to a 48-27-6 record over the past four years, including the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win in 2012.
