Wolverines defeat Titans, advance to PAC Championship

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team avenged a regular-season loss to Westminster by defeating the Titans 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at College Field.

Junior Sarah Flenniken (Hudson, Ohio/CVCA) headed in the game-winning goal off a free kick from senior Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) early in the second half.

The Wolverines dominated possession of the ball in the first half, outshooting Westminster 12-1 overall and 5-1 on goal, but Titans' goalkeeper Maddy Frech kept the game scoreless through 45 minutes.

Grove City found its opportunity in the 60th minute when Westminster was called for a foul just outside the left side of the box. Cessar lofted the ensuing free kick in front of the goal, and Flenniken headed the ball just past Frech's reach to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

The goal was Flenniken's second of the season while Cessar tied fellow senior Chelsea Tarolli (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) with her team-leading fifth assist.

From there, the Wolverine defense continued its staunch play, holding the Titans to just five shots for the match to record the team's fourth shutout of the season.

Junior Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) made two saves in goal to earn the shutout and victory.

With the victory, the Wolverines (11-8-1) advance to the PAC Championship match to face top-seeded Thomas More (16-1-2) in a rematch of last year's title game. Grove City battled Thomas More to a scoreless draw before the Saints earned the PAC Tournament Title and NCAA Tournament automatic bid via a 3-2 shootout victory on November 3, 2012.

The title match will be played at Thomas More this weekend at a date and time to be determined. The Saints advanced by defeating #4-seed Saint Vincent 2-0 this afternoon in the other PAC semifinal.
