Grove City rolls past Marietta in opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) scored the game-winner in the 16th minute and freshmen Lacy Harkrader (Mineral, Va./Louisa County) and Megan Van Kirk (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) each netted their first collegiate goals as the Grove City College women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Marietta in their season opener at College Field on Friday afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop made four saves to record her 11th career shutout in goal, moving her into a tie for the most shutouts in women's soccer program history at the College.

Thomas, the team's leading returning scorer from a year ago, started her junior campaign strong by giving the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute.

The Grove City advantage grew to 2-0 in the 34th minute when junior Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) played a ball ahead to senior Holly Spofford (Broad Run, Va./Homeschooled), who crossed a ball to Harkrader for her first Wolverine tally.

Marietta nearly cut the deficit in half in the 87th minute, putting the ball in the back of the net, but an offside call negated the score.

Van Kirk added an insurance goal with just 73 seconds remaining when she sent home a ball deflected off a pass from Thomas.

Marietta goalkeepers Sam Kelley and Rebecca Tenney each made two saves in goal in the loss.

The Wolverines return to action tomorrow when they face Houghton at 2 p.m.
