Wolverines snap skid, whip Waynesburg in PAC opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team returned to its winning ways to open its 2014 Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule with a big 3-0 win at Waynesburg on Friday night at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Freshman Kat Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) netted the first goal of her collegiate career for the Wolverines in the victory while juniors Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) both scored goals.

Mathes got the Wolverines on the board and ended a scoreless drought of 567 minutes by scoring her second goal of the season in the 15th minute of the match. That goal would prove to be the game-winner.

Grove City (2-8-1) would carry the 1-0 lead through halftime, and Thomas would give the Wolverines a much-needed insurance goal in the 58th minute to make it a 2-0 game.

Kouzelos would find the back of the net less than two minutes later to extend the Grove City advantage to 3-0.

The Wolverines held a commanding 20-8 advantage in total shots, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded two saves in just over 80 minutes of action in goal while junior Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) played the final 9:45 as the two combined for the shutout.

Grove City continues its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule on Tuesday when the Wolverines host Thiel at 4 p.m.
