Grove City blanks Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by earning a 3-0 home win over Thiel Tuesday afternoon at College Field.

Grove City broke through at 28:04 when freshman midfielder Lindsay Hutton (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) scored her first collegiate goal after directing a loose ball in the goal box into the net. Sophomore defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) assisted Hutton's goal.

The Wolverines then sealed the win with a pair of goals in the second half. Junior midfielder Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored an unassisted goal at 47:12, doubling the lead. Mathes now leads the team with three goals this season.

Junior forward Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) closed the scoring at 84:17 after receiving an assist from freshman Megan Van Kirk (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny).

Grove City (3-8-1) held a 23-5 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and junior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) combined for the shutout. Lathrop made one save in 74:42 of action while Lapia played the final 15:18.

Thiel goalkeeper Mary Oakey stopped six shots.

Each of Grove City's three wins this season has been by a 3-0 margin. The Wolverines return to action Friday night at Bethany. The conference match begins at 7 p.m.
