Wolverines stay perfect in PAC, shutout Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Junior Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored twice and the Grove City College women's soccer team recorded its fourth-consecutive shutout as the Wolverines stayed perfect in Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 victory at rival Geneva on Wednesday night at Reeves Stadium.

Junior Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and freshman Lacy Harkrader (Mineral, Va./Louisa County) each added insurance goals for the Wolverines (5-8-1, 4-0 PAC) in the win.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half when senior Sarah Flenniken (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) dropped a ball back to Mathes for her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute. Flenniken notched her second assist of the season.

Flenniken notched her second assist of the match just five minutes later when she crossed a ball from the right side to Thomas' feet to double Grove City's lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute. Thomas drew even with Mathes with her fourth goal of the season while the assist was Flenniken's third of the year.

Grove City's lead grew to 3-0 in the 66th minute when freshman Katherine Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) dropped a ball back to Mathes, who found the back of the net on a chip from 18 yards out for her second goal of the night and team-best fifth of the season.

Harkrader made it a 4-0 game in the 87th minute when fellow freshman Megan Van Kirk (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) fed her a ball through a seam in the defense, and Harkrader carried the ball 30 yards before beating the keeper in a one-on-one situation for her second goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) made one first-half save during the first 72:40 in goal for the Wolverines to earn the win while junior Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) wrapped up the shutout by playing the final 17:20.

The Wolverines held a 24-5 advantage over the Golden Tornadoes in total shots, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Grove City will try to remain perfect in conference play when they host Washington & Jefferson on Saturday at 1 p.m.
