Saints edge Grove City in PAC title match

PITTSBURGH – The Grove City College women’s soccer team gave 10th-ranked Thomas More all it could handle for 45 minutes, but an early second-half goal proved to be the difference as the Saints held on for a 1-0 victory over the Wolverines in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament Final on Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.

Thomas More (19-1) had a pair of dangerous chances in the match’s opening minutes, but the Wolverines regained composure to win the possession battle over the final thirty minutes of the first half, finding several dangerous chances of their own and limiting the Saints threats to send the game into halftime tied 0-0.

The Saints, however, found their opportunity less than three minutes into the second half, as Olivia Huber crossed a ball from the right side of the box over to Julia Flagge-Echols, who beat senior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) inside the left post to give Thomas More a 1-0 lead.

That would be all that the Saints would need, as Thomas More would control possession and momentum for the remainder of the half to hold on for the victory and their fourth-consecutive conference title.

Lathrop made five saves in goal in her final match as a Wolverine. The Saints held a 21-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Junior Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) led the Wolverines with three shots, including two on goal.

This marked the third-consecutive year that Thomas More and Grove City met in the PAC Championship match.

Grove City concludes the 2014 season with a 9-10-2 overall record.
