Grove City wins in OT

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team improved to 3-1-1 overall by pulling out a 3-2 victory over host Fredonia State in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Fredonia's Blue Devil Classic.

Senior forward Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) scored the game-winning goal 3:12 into the second extra session to give the Wolverines the win. Thomas, who now has a team-leading four goals this season, received an assist from sophomore Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) on the game-winner.

Van Kirk scored her first goal of 2015 at 84:45 to give Grove City a 2-1 lead. Thomas assisted Van Kirk's score.

Fredonia State (1-4) tied the match at the 85:40 mark on Maggie Papia's unassisted goal. The Blue Devils scored the first goal of the afternoon at 42:29 on a goal from Alexis Moreland.

Grove City tied the match early in the second half when senior forward Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) scored at 46:52. Sophomore Katherine Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) assisted Wild's goal.

In goal, senior Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) stopped six shots to secure the win. Grove City outshot Fredonia State, 21-12, including a 19-10 edge in regulation. Fredonia State had five corner kicks and Grove City recorded four.

Thomas and junior defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) earned All-Tournament recognition for Grove City.

The Wolverines will host longtime regional foe Allegheny at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
