Grove City comeback falls short at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team was able to even the score after falling into an early 2-0 hole, but Washington & Jefferson scored in the 66th minute to retake the lead and defeat the Wolverines 3-2 on Wednesday evening in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Alexandre Stadium.

Sophomores Lindsay Hutton (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) both scored goals for the Wolverines (6-5-1, 1-1 PAC) in the loss while junior defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) and senior forward Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) each added assists.

The Wolverines fell behind early when conference scoring leader Jordan Toohey headed in a ball on a double touch off a corner kick in the fifth minute. W&J (8-1-1) made it a 2-0 game in the 13th minute when Ashton Grimm followed a Toohey blocked shot and finished the rebound.

Grove City was able to cut the lead in half before the halftime break, as the Wolverines earned a corner kick and White played a ball that Hutton headed in to close the gap to 2-1 at the 27-minute mark. Hutton's goal was her second of the year while White notched her second assist.

Early in the second half, the Wolverines would find the equalizer in the 56th minute as Thomas carried a ball along the right endline and crossed it into the box, where Van Kirk headed it home to even the score at 2-2. The goal was Van Kirk's second of the season while Thomas registered her team-leading third assist.

Senior Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) stopped five shots in goal in the loss. Washington and Jefferson outshot Grove City

The Wolverines continue their conference slate on Saturday when they host Bethany at 3:30 p.m. on College Field.
