Wolverines cruise past Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) scored twice and five other Wolverines added goals as the Grove City College women's soccer team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on College Field Saturday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Donahoe (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) netted her first collegiate goal while sophomore forward Kat Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), senior forward Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), junior midfielder Lindsey Reichert (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge), and sophomore defender Elena Guerra (Arlington, Texas/Nolan Catholic) all scored.

Grove City (7-5-1, 2-1 PAC) jumped out to an early lead when Wild played a through-ball ahead to Thomas, who made a move and finished for her fifth goal of the season to put the Wolverines up 1-0 in the ninth minute. Just two minutes later, Kouzelos would collect an errant cross on the left side of the box and beat a defender before finding the back of the net to double the Grove City advantage to 2-0 in the 11th minute.

Despite outshooting Bethany (2-8-1, 0-2) 21-4 in the first half, that would be all the scoring the Wolverines would manage, taking the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Grove City extended the lead to 3-0 when sophomore forward Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) crossed a ball into Wild in the box, and the senior finished just inside the right post for her fourth goal of the season. Van Kirk recorded her third assist of the year on the play.

The Wolverines would add another in the 60th minute when a While shot was saved but kept in play and Thomas put back the rebound to make it a 4-0 game. Thomas notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season while Wild was credited with the assist - her third of the year.

Donahoe would extend the lead to 5-0 with an unassisted rip from the left corner of the box that bent inside the upper left corner of the goal in the 68th minute. In the 76th minute, Guerra would carry a ball down along the right-side endline and cross a ball to Reichert, who scored on a one-touch finish from the doorstep to push Grove City's advantage to 6-0.

Guerra would then close the scoring in the 81st minute by ripping a shot from the right side of the box across frame into the upper 90 to make it a 7-0 match.

Senior Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) stopped a single shot in goal during the first half to earn the victory while freshman Trisha Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) faced just two total shots and none on goal during the second half as the duo combined for the shutout.

The Wolverines visit Westminster on Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. conference match.
