Wolverines whip Bearcats on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) recorded a goal and an assist and three other Wolverines scored as the Grove City College women's soccer team pulled away for a 4-2 Senior Day victory over Saint Vincent (6-8, 2-3 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at College Field.

Senior defender Madi Zajicek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and sophomore forward Lacy Harkrader (Mineral, Va./Louisa County) each netted their first goals of the year for Grove City (8-5-2, 3-1-1 PAC) in the win while senior forward Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) also scored.

The Wolverines wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as sophomore forward Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) crossed a ball from just inside the endline on the right side of the goal to Wild, who smashed a ball from the doorstep just inside the right post to give Grove City a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the match. The goal was Wild's fifth of the season, good for second-best on the team, while Van Kirk matched the team lead with her fourth assist.

Saint Vincent would answer back, as a Grove City foul just outside the box set up a Bearcat free kick. Emily Johns took the kick from about 25 yards out and found Emily Luppold inside the six-yard box, where Luppold finished to even the score at 1-1 in the ninth minute.

The score would remain tied into the 42nd minute, when Saint Vincent was called for a foul in the box. White would calmly step up and convert the ensuing penalty kick to put the Wolverines back on top 2-1 heading into halftime. White's goal was her third of the season and her third by penalty kick.

After the break, White would once again take part in a Wolverine score, as she bent a corner kick from the right side on frame. Bearcat goalkeeper Corinne Burk made the initial save, but the ball went right to Zajicek, who cleaned up the rebound to give Grove City a 3-1 advantage in the 62nd minute. The goal, which would prove to be the game-winner, was Zajicek's first since October 4, 2013, when she netted the game-winner in a 4-1 home victory over Waynesburg, while White notched her third assist of the year.

Harkrader closed the scoring for the Wolverines in the 67th minute, taking a great through-ball for a breakaway before beating the keeper across the box inside the right post to make it a 4-1 game.

The Bearcats would close the scoring in the 86th minute as Luppold played a ball ahead to Maggie Nelson, who finished from 15 yards out to cut the Saint Vincent deficit to 4-2.

Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made four saves while playing the first 79 minutes in goal while sophomore Trisha Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) played the final 11 minutes.

Prior to the match, the Wolverines honored their five seniors -- Zajicek, Lapia, Wild, and midfielders Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle).

Grove City hosts conference-leading and nationally-ranked Thomas More on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
