Grove City battles No. 10 Thomas More to draw
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made seven saves as the Grove City College women's soccer team became just the second team during the 2015 season to shutout defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Thomas More in a 0-0 tie on Wednesday afternoon at College Field.
Grove City (8-5-3, 3-1-2 PAC) battled fiercely with the Saints (12-0-2, 5-0-1), ranking tenth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, through the first 45 minutes, keeping possession nearly even despite Thomas More holding a narrow 9-7 lead in total shots.
The Saints would be the more dangerous team the rest of the way, outshooting Grove City 16-5 during the second period and two overtime sessions, but the Wolverine defense would stand tough to produce its eighth shutout of the season.
Megan Barton made two saves for the Saints. The Wolverines held a narrow 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Coming into today's match, Thomas More had won 33 consecutive PAC matches dating back to October 29, 2011. Washington and Jefferson tied the Saints 0-0 three days earlier on October 26 at Alexandre Stadium.
Grove City visits Thiel Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in conference action.
