Thomas golden goal lifts Grove City past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Kat Kouzelos (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) in the 107th minute to lift the Grove City College women's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action on a rainy Wednesday evening at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Senior midfielder Abby Mathes (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and senior forward Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) each added goals for the Wolverines (10-5-3, 5-1-2 PAC), who have now clinched a berth in next week's four-team PAC Championship Tournament.

Grove City jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute as Mathes headed in a corner kick by junior defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) for her second goal of the season. White recorded her fourth assist of the year on the play.

Waynesburg (6-9, 3-5) would answer quickly, as a Wolverine foul set up a Jacket free kick, and Sam Nichols chipped the resulting free kick of Wolverine senior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) to even the score at 1-1 in the ninth minute. That score would hold until halftime despite a 13-4 Grove City advantage in total shots.

The Jackets would the take the lead in the 59th minute as Natalie Fortna scored an unassisted goal on a blast from about 20 yards out, but the Wolverines would counter just 30 seconds later, as a Thomas shot hit off the post and Wild headed in the rebound for her sixth goal of the year to even the score at 2-2 in the 60th minute.

That would be all the offense in regulation, as Grove City would play an overtime match for the sixth time in 2015. After a quiet first overtime period, the Wolverines would outshoot the Jackets 4-0 in the second overtime period, the final of those being Thomas's finish from Kouzelos with 3:53 remaining. The goal was Thomas's team-leading eighth of the year and team-best fifth game-winner while Kouzelos registered her third assist.

Lapia recorded a pair of saves in goal to earn the victory. Grove City outshot Waynesburg 28-7 overall, including 15-4 on goal, and held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Grove City closes out the regular season on Saturday, hosting Chatham at 1 p.m.
