Wolverines pull away from Chatham in regular-season finale
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Hutton (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) scored twice and both sophomore Megan Van Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior defender Jordyn White (Mars, Pa./Mars) added a goal and an assist as the Grove City College women's soccer team wrapped up their regular season with a 4-0 victory over Chatham on College Field Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines (11-5-3, 6-1-2 PAC) jumped out to an early lead on the Cougars (8-8, 2-7) in the sixth minute. Senior midfielder Kristin Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Chapelgate Christian) would cross a ball from the right endline into the box to Van Kirk, who used the back of her to flick a ball on to Hutton at the doorstep. Hutton would blast the point-blank chance into the upper right corner of the net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Despite outshooting the Cougars 11-3 in the first half, that lone goal would be the only offense that Grove City would manage, as Chatham held them off the board for the remaining 39 minutes.
Grove City would waste no time in adding to their lead in the second half, however, as senior Sammie Wild (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) would cross a ball from the left endline to Van Kirk, who would rip a shot into the top of the net from inside the six to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage just 31 seconds into the period.
Less than six minutes later, White would bend a corner kick from the right side just inside the right post and off the outstreched fist of Cougar goalkeeper Emmory Tardivo to make it a 3-0 game in the 52nd minute. Later in the 68th minute, White would be dangerous with another corner kick, finding Hutton at the six for a goal inside the left post to close the scoring at 4-0.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Lapia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) made two saves in 71-plus minutes of shutout action in goal to earn the win while sophomore Trisha Winters (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) also made two saves over the final 18:32.
Grove City will be the No. 3 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament and will play a road semifinal match at either Thomas More or Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday. The Saints and Presidents meet in Crestview Hills, Ky., tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.; a Thomas More win would send the Wolverines to W&J on Tuesday, but a tie or a Presidents win would send Grove City to Thomas More.
