Grove City drops opener to Tartans

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Junior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) collected a pair of individual wins but the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Carnegie Mellon Saturday afternoon, 135-96.

Whitbeck won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.69 and then claimed a victory in the 200 butterfly, turning in a time of 2:05.72. Whitbeck also qualified for the NCAA championships in the 200 butterfly, thus earning the opportunity to defend her national championship in that event. Whitbeck's time was nearly three full seconds under the "A" standard. She also established a new CMU pool record.

Also for Grove City, Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) won the 1000 freestyle in 11:14.92 while Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:18.67.
