Lady Wolverines 5th at Longnecker Invite; Whitbeck wins two
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A pair of victories Saturday from junior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) helped the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team claim fifth place in the 10-team James E. Longnecker Invitational at the Grove City College Pool.
The Lady Wolverines finished with 432 points. Carnegie Mellon won the team championship with 749.5 points.
Whitbeck set a new College Pool record in the 200 medley, posting a time of 2:12.12. She also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 butterfly, surpassing the "A" qualifying standard with a time of 57.96 seconds.
Sophomore Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) recorded a pair of second-place finishes for the Lady Wolverines. Bare took runner-up honors in the 200 free (1:59.47) and 500 free (5:17.67). Jacquie Adlam (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) earned third place in the 100 breaststroke.
Grove City also fared extremely well in the relay events. Adlam, Bare, Whitbeck and Annie Lindsay (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) took second in the 400 medley relay in 4:10.97. That quartet also combined for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Bare, Whitbeck, BrieAnn Artz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Cecilia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) notched a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.
