Lady Wolverines second after first day 

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior All-American Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 500 freestyle during Thursday's preliminaries, one of several highlights for the Grove City College women's swim team at the first day of the Grove City College Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference championships. 

After the first day of the three-day event, Grove City is second with 194 points, just five behind PAC rival Westminster.

Whitbeck set a new GCC, pool, conference and invitational record in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.13 Thursday morning. She won the finals Thursday night with a time of 5:08.08. Teammate Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) finished second in 5:20.67. 

Meanwhile, freshman Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) took first in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:14.54. Sophomore Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Hawken Upper) took third in the 200 IM, posting a 2:17.48 clocking. 

Pullin, Whitbeck, Magee and Jacquie Adlam (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) combined to finish second in the 400 medley relay in 4:05.83. Pullin, Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Amanda Brozenic (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) took third in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:45.12.

In addition, Cecilia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) finished eighth in the 50 free and BrieAnn Artz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) was eighth in the 500 free.

Friday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. in the Grove City College Pool.
