Three Lady Wolverines win titles on second day of PAC meet
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) and Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) all posted individual wins during the second day of competition at the Grove City College Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference championships Friday night.
After two nights, Grove City is third in the nine-team event with 460 points. Westminster leads with 520 points while Washington and Jefferson is second at 472.
Bare won the 200 free in 1:58.58 while Magee took first in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:49.31. Whitbeck established a new conference and invitational record in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.02. That mark is over a second below the NCAA Division III "A" qualifying standard (58.29). In addition, Bare, Magee, Whitbeck and Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) combined to set a new PAC record in the 800 freestyle relay with a 7:57.06 clocking.
Jacquie Adlam (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.17) while Shaddak claimed fifth in that race. Cecilia Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) took sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Meanwhile, freshman BrieAnn Artz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) finished sixth in the 1000 free with an 11:35.93.
Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Hawken Upper) finished sixth in the 100 backstroke while Lauren Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) placed seventh in the 200 free. Annie Lindsay (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) finished eighth in the 100 backstroke.
Grove City opened Friday night action with a third-place effort in the 200 medley relay. Pullin, Adlam, Whitbeck and Magee turned in a time of 1:53.71.
Saturday's trials begin at 10 a.m. with the finals set to start at 5:30 p.m.
